Spotlight: Delores Sapp

Verizon employee Delores Sapp recently volunteered as a chaperone for the 2009 Philadelphia NAACP ACTSO Competitors. ACTSO or Academic, Cultural, Technological Scientific Olympics, is a yearlong program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage achievement among African-American high school students. This was the 31st anniversary of the ACTSO program and comes in the year that the NAACP celebrates its centennial.

The Philadelphia NAACP ACTSO had 11 competitors and was awarded with four medals including two gold medals, in the fields of Mathematics, Original Essay, Chemistry, and Medical Health.

"During the ceremony as the tears rolled down my face and the excitement I felt within became stronger and stronger all that I could think about was how fortunate I am to have these 730 young people as future leaders of tomorrow," Delores explained. I am also fortunate to work for Verizon a company that is in the forefront in promoting literacy and volunteerism.
