Shower for the Shelter
The Verizon Foundation is sponsoring a companywide "Shower for the Shelter" collection drive April 1-11. Employees are asked to donate essential household and personal items that can help local domestic violence shelters provide services to the victims - both men and women - they support.
Boxes with the Shower for the Shelter logo will be set up in nearly 375 Verizon locations across the country so employees can drop off their donations.
Items needed for the drive include shampoo and conditioner, body wash, soap, cosmetics, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, paper towels, diapers, baby wipes and diaper-rash ointment, powdered formula, baby bottles, wash cloths and towels, first-aid medications and adhesive bandages, tissues, toilet paper and more.
Selena Strickland, operations administrator of the Intervention Center in Parkersburg, W.Va., said the donations from drives such as the Shower for the Shelter make a huge difference.
"For us, it's a lifesaver at times," Strickland said. "The only thing people have when then come here is what's on their backs, so we rely on donations to help. We don't have the money to buy the necessities that these people need, so if it wasn't for Verizon and others, we'd be in big trouble."
Domestic violence remains the single largest cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the United States - more than muggings, car accidents, and rapes combined. The Shower for the Shelter drive is an easy way that individual employees can help to ease the trauma of domestic violence.
Confronting the national epidemic of domestic violence and working to prevent it is one of the foundation's targeted social issues with a companywide focus.
