National Education Association President Reg Weaver Honored for Lifetime of Service

Verizon and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation presented outgoing National Education Association President Reg Weaver with the Augustus "Gus" Hawkins Excellence in Education Award on Thursday at the Celebration of African-American Leadership in Denver.

The award is named in honor of former U.S. Rep. "Gus" Hawkins, a longtime education and civil rights advocate who played a key role in enacting Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Weaver, a longtime leader and strong advocate for providing great public schools, has continually championed efforts to improve education and bring unique learning opportunities to all children.

"Reg Weaver has been an inspiration, and one of the most effective and dedicated advocates for American students, all American students, and for teachers," said Verizon Foundation President Patrick Gaston.

In addition to the awards presentation, those in attendance were treated to demonstration of the free educational resources available on Verizon's Thinkfinity.org.
