One hundred children of Verizon employees were awarded four-year, $20,000 college scholarships by the Verizon Foundation. Majors included everything from engineering to fine arts, to aviation management.

Verizon Wireless HopeLine has partnered with law enforcement and government agencies across the country in a continued commitment towards domestic violence prevention and awareness. Part of this effort is the HopeLine Law Enforcement Partnership Award first given in 2005; this award honors the efforts of public safety organizations nationwide that are committed to reducing domestic violence.

Verizon Gives Grant to Child Abuse Prevention Services of Long Island, NY for its "SurfSafe" Program for Children. Verizon provided a grant to Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and the promotion of child safety. Recognizing that education is the key to prevention, CAPS will roll out its "SurfSafe" program to 5th graders in the Fall of 2009. The Verizon grant will be used to develop "SurfSafe", an Internet safety program for 5th graders. During its annual luncheon, CAPS awarded Verizon the Corporate Citizen Award, in recognition of Verizon's dedication to philanthropy and activism on Long Island. CAPS' 2009 Community Leadership Award honoree and guest speaker was John P. Halligan, nationally renowned cyber-bully prevention activist.
Verizon Foundation Supports FRONTLINE Project Examining Life in the Digital Age
The Verizon Foundation is providing a $1 million grant to partner with PBS FRONTLINE in exploring the answer to that question with an exciting, innovative initiative called "Digital Nation: Life on the Virtual Frontier." The multi-platform project will include a website offering video reports and user-submitted stories, educational outreach initiatives and a national television broadcast early next year.
